POEMS

Ernestine T. Henley
IN HIS PRESENCE

Hours of prayer seeking His face giving him praise for His love and His grace
Feeling His presence so perfectly near that He hears my sighs and knows my fears
I know I must seek Him and trust him each day
that the joy of His presence will not go away

LOVE

Love is not like the wind that blows going who knows where
Love does not go out of style as does the clothes you wear
Love is a decision that you make which does not start and stop
the kind of love our children has that comes straight from the heart
It’s not enough to love some so
and forget about all others
God commands this kind of love be given to all brothers.

WHEN LOVE COMES MY WAY

When love comes my way
how will I react
Will I give my heart freely
or consciously hold back
Will showing how I feel
minimize the pain
if the one I love
hurts me once again

I have decided just what I will do
I’ll give my heart without a care
and trust the Lord with my welfare

A GUARDIAN

A guardian is a blessing from our God
a scared trust bestowed to care for one he truly loves
to nurture as it grows
The trustee is called a parent the loved one is a child
As you fulfill the calling the blessings are assured because you are now a guardian of someone God adores

A PHENOMENAL WOMAN

A phenomenal woman is a woman of God. The Almighty is her father, Jesus Christ is her Lord, the Spirit is her leader, comfort and guide, the three bear witness that God’s on her side.

Man looks upon the countenance in order to see, but God looks at the heart in search of beauty.

A phenomenal woman you also can be, because as a woman thinketh,
than so is she

THE GALLERY

I look at the ocean, the waves rushing in, amazed at how the water stops then rolls back out again. I look upon the mountains, what an awesome sight, standing like sentinels in majestic might

The world is God’s own gallery with so much more to see, His very own handiwork, and admission’s free

IT'S TIME TO UNMASK

It could be Mardi Gras today for all the masks we see
You think it’s someone you recognize but it is just an ingenious disguise
a clever ruse is in use
that allows no one to see
that behind the veneer is doubt and fear
which masks can-not set free
The masquerade is just a game
And will never garner you acclaim but there is something you can do humble yourself in the sight of the
Lord and He will exalt you

A COUNTRY BOY'S PRAYER

Sitting on a porch at night the stars were shining bright
to put it quite frankly
they were the only light
I couldn’t see my feet
which were on the step beneath
or my hands upraised in prayer as I earnestly beseeched
“Lord, when I grow up don’t let me be
sitting on a porch at night
with nothing but the stars for light

HOPE

When I hear the word hope on the lips of man
it’s just an utterance they speak merely a word that they exclaim before dim progresses to bleak
Not so from the mouth of believers who wait with great patience and joy anticipating the day
that they will receive
the promises of Christ they hoped for

LET THE GLORY OF THE LORD FILL MY HEART

Let the glory of the Lord fill my heart
Let his glory come down and turn my life around
Let the glory of the Lord fill my heart
Let the joy of the Lord fill my heart Where his joy is found Is where his strength abounds
Let the joy of the Lord fill my heart
Let the love of the Lord fill my heart Because His love came down and changed my heart around
Let the love of the Lord fill my heart

YOU'RE THE LIFTER OF MY HEAD

I am fearfully and wonderfully made my Lord
I am fearfully and wonderfully made
I will not strive for approval of man
You’re the lifter of my head
I am clay in the hand of the potter so Lord, do just as you please
I will not strive for approval of

TRUST IN YOUR LOVE

The Lord is so good his mercy is everlasting
his mercy is everlasting and sure
and thy word oh Lord
forever is settled in heaven
there is peace when we trust in your love
The Lord is so good
His love never changes
His love never changes nor moves
and I bless you Oh Lord
for your Love and your mercy
your grace; your joy,
there is peace when we trust in your love

FRIENDS

Friendships forged through many years
of lots of laughs and copious tears
Friends, who are always there
To pray with you or just to share
the heavy burdens that you bear
Friends are loyal, steadfast and true always loving, never judging
through good times and bad
I thank you Lord, for giving me the good friends that I have

EMOTIONS

Emotions are very complex,
not always what they seem
Adore to abhor and lust to disgust
like a pendulum they swing
right to left they oscillate
causing truth to be unclear
and makes it hard to define
the very thin line that divides what is false from real

Emotions can cloud your vision
and alter what you see
because what they are is just a mirage
and not what they appear to be

DIVERSITY

Why am I accepting of people I find
whose faults they have
are similar to mine

But in areas in which
I have not obtained
I have no tolerance
if we’re not the same

Is it because their strengths
makes me see, some of the things
that are deficient in me

If I would embrace their strengths
I would find, one day those same attributes would be mine

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL

When I look in the mirror, who do I see
but a stranger in glasses looking at me
A body more portly then svelte
standing there, with a double chin
and thin graying hair

When did this happen, how can it be
because on the inside this just isn’t me

A PARABLE

There was a man who had a garden in which he took great care.
With love he pruned his fragrant flowers and trimmed his artistic hedge

He loved his beautiful garden
in it he was content, to smell the lovely perfume of the roses aromatic scent

Until one day his interest strayed and his garden was neglected
instead of restoring what he had to the way it once was seen
he looked for a place in which he deemed the grass was twice as green

A WOMAN AND A WELL

Water in a cistern stagnant and stale,
I was never intended to be

God created me woman,
Christ made me a well of love, health and purity

His Word like a fountain flows out from within
Pure and untainted from pride, lust and sin

Christ is the source of this life giving flow
Refreshing, sustaining and causing to grow

When I am connected to Christ Jesus, my Lord
From out of my belly will constantly pour
A flood of living water, with power and might
Whose only source is The River of Life.

MY SON

(Curtis G. Thomas – 1971-2010)
I remember the day that you were born A beautiful baby boy
On a day that was so cold You brought warmth into my soul

Your smile can light up any room
Your wit can make me laugh
If I could only make you see The value that you are to me, With God’s help there is no thing that you can’t overcome, I pray that by His awesome Grace that you will soon obtain, All the desires hidden in your heart but found in Jesus Name
2004

Now my son, you have obtained
All that’s found in Jesus Name.
You are enjoying abundant life
With our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Until I see your face again
One thing is for sure There is a place within my heart
that is only yours

Love Always, Mom

THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

Jesus is the Precious Pearl,
all are seeking for
Hidden in the kingdom,
away from Satan’s Clan
But loved and treasured, by all of those,
who place their lives into His hands.

To obtain Kingdom treasure,
You’ll find it hid in Christ,
it’s going to cost, No money,
but it will cost your life,
You must submit your pride,
Give up your comfort
zone and submit total obedience
to Jesus Christ Alone.

TEN IN TWO AND TWO IN TEN

There was a time when I grew up
we lived not quite so lavish
It was a house where heat was scarce
and more kids than mom could manage

Ten people slept like bookends
in a small two bedroom house
It really seems ironic
when I think about those days
because now I’m trying to just make due
in a ten room house with only two
